Above: Happy old man
Retirement especially when you love your job so much would be difficult to leave. For years it had been part of your habit or your system for quite sometime. It’s like taking coffee every morning half your life and then all the sudden you’re not allowed to have coffee anymore.
Bringkerhoff was a 62 year old school teacher who just realized, given the preparation, that its time to wave the school good bye and get rid of her watch as well. But she never expected that it would be this hard.
Having had a job for most of her years and suddenly losing it made her feel incompetent and actually made her feel shameful of not having a job. Her job identified her persona and without her job, she didn’t know who she is as an individual.
Work actually has a lot of psychological benefits to it that it seems to be too good to live without. It is ones sense of fulfillment in life, a man’s measure of success. It’s like taking care of the baby as it grows and then all the sudden have to let go.
People who are adjusting to a life of retirement should just keep in mind that the key word would be… fulfillment.
Try to step back and look at your accomplishments, how many lives you’ve touched, and what it is that triggered you to feel that you have succeeded in your endeavors. Once you’ve reminisced these experiences and absorbed that you have lived it in such a way that you are satisfied, then that would be the time to keep in mind that its time to give way to others who want to experience the same.
